Due to the weight limitation on the Maria Valéria bridge between the city of Esztergom in Hungary and the city of Štúrovo in Slovakia, all trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are forced to travel a 200 km longer route when crossing the border. By the establishment of the cross-border cargo ferry connection, not only the travel distance and time is saved, but the environmental burden on the population living in the affected areas caused by the huge traffic is decreased. The cargo ferry as a combined means of transport creates sustainable development conditions and cohesion between the two economically complementary regions and decreases the environmental burdens in the Danube areas.
